Kenichi Yoshida / Character designer / TOKYO
Born in Kumamoto Prefecture, Kenichi Yoshida grew up quickly after a shocking encounter with animation. After studied at Tokyo Designer Gakuin, he joined Studio Ghibli at the age of 20. After working on the original drawings for films such as "The Red Pig" and "Princess Mononoke", he worked on the TV series "Overman King Gainer" and "Psalms of Planets Eureka Seven" as a character designer, animation director and main animator. In 2005, he won the 10th Animation Kobe Individual Award, and in 2006, the Character Design Award at the Tokyo International Anime Fair. His drawings, which inherit the durability of anime characters born from Toei Video works and incorporate them into modern and attractive designs, strongly attract viewers. After working on the character design for the TV series "Gundam Reconguista in G," his latest work is "Chikyuugai Shonen Shoujo," which he is currently working on with director Mitsuo Iso.

熊本県出身、衝撃的なアニメーションとの出会いをきっかけに、すくすくと育った吉田健一少年は、東京デザイナー学院を経て20歳でスタジオジブリに入社。 映画『紅の豚』『もののけ姫』等の原画を経て、 TV「OVERMANキングゲイナー」「交響詩篇エウレカセブン」のキャラクターデザイン、アニメーションディレクター・メインアニメーターを担当。 2005年 第10回アニメーション神戸 個人賞 2006年 東京国際アニメフェア キャラクターデザイン賞を受賞する。 東映動画作品から生まれたアニメキャラクターの耐久性を継承し、現代的で魅力溢れるデザインに落とし込んだその絵は、視聴者を強く惹きつける。 TV『ガンダム Gのレコンギスタ』のキャラクターデザインを担当したのちの最新作は、磯光雄監督と共に制作中の「地球外少年少女」。

I had been thinking that if I could paint from the perspective of the future of the city and the ancient city, I would be able to create a city of the future, but I was having difficulty imaging it. Although this may be resolved someday as digital technology evolves, I have not yet become accustomed to the difference in sensation between pictures created using analog input and pictures created using digital equipment, and I find myself drifting between the two, much like a city floating between the past and the future. It would probably be a blessing if I could successfully fade away along with the scenery that will probably fade away in the flow of the city into the future.

都市の未来像といにしえの都市という観点で描ければ、と思いつつ全く想像力が及ばず難儀していた。デジタル技術が進化していけばいつかは解消するかもしれないが、アナログ入力としての絵とデジタルの機器を使った絵の感覚の差にまだ慣れずにその狭間で漂う自分は、過去と未来の狭間で浮遊する都市と同じなのだろう。都市の未来への流れのなかで、おそらく消えていくであろう風景と一緒に自分もうまくフェイドアウトできればまだ御の字なのかもしれない。
